|From the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean|
The US is an enormous country. It is 4,500 kilometres from east to west.
A train takes more than 48 hours to cross the country. A flight in a fast
jet plane takes about five hours.
Letís follow a flight across the country. After the plane has taken off
from the Atlantic coast it is soon flying over the Appalachian Mountains.
The, for hundreds of kilometres, it crosses farmland. On a clear day the passengers can see the five Great Lakes, which lie between the US and Canada. Then the place flies over the flat prairies. Next the Rocky Mountains appear in the west, with snow on the tops. An hour later the plane crosses the deserts and finally comes down into the valleys of California. It lands not far from the beaches of the Pacific Ocean.
